architectural competition design

University Malaya - PAM millenium workshop competition on february 1999. the competition theme are Retrospective For Perspective. Organized by The Department Of Architecture, University Of Malaya Kuala Lumpur. during Architectural workshop xiii. the competition divided into three categories included category 1 for certificate level, category 2 for diploma and B.Sc of architecture and third category for student in degree level. this is the most important workshop for the end of the 20th century. all students in the school of architecture in Malaysia are gathering here for a few days. architectural competition

the competition are in conjunction with Mohd. Zamzam Siran / [email protected] and Muhammad Rufi A. Latiff / [email protected] and was submitted as a group work

DESIGN STATEMENT

Project name  : Graduate Centre
Location  : CBD, Batu Pahat Johor
INTRODUCTION :
Today, for the inhabitants of tomorrow, the Graduate Centre explain the continuity of our community. Our heritage, our culture, our life, we must preserve it, we must understand the kampung. Graduate Centre will improve our environment. Improve the quality of lifestyle. By identifying our culture, we must begin from the root. The root that influencing to the next generation.
Educate them. Traditional, vernacular and hi-tech architecture, the elements must follow our life. We shouldn’t create a new tradition for the future that unaware our culture and heritage. Where we have come from must inform where we are going. To speculate on the nature of the global village, we must understand the kampung.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES :
1. To create graduate center for the high level institution.
2. To integrate the latest innovative and intelligent building for low energy use and climate control.
3. To feature energy efficient building control and management systems.
4. To incorporate a Malaysian vernacular, contemporary and high tech expression.
5. To incorporate intelligent features where the building fabric, space, services and information systems. Respond efficiently to changing requirements of the owner, user and the environment.
6. To accommodate an operating capacity designed for the year 2020 and the ultimate working population of 300.

THE SITE :
Located in the historical site in CBD area of Batu Pahat, the Graduate Centre are surrounded by existing kampung and new development of Bandar Banang Jaya. residential and institutional building are the major zone to enhance the functionality of the project. Graduate centre are surrounded by academic building such as vocational school, high school, secondary school, primary school and others lower level of academic building. Its also located in the centre of high level institution such as Tun Hussien Onn Institute Of Technology, Sultan Abu Bakar Teaching College and other institutions.
The site also has its own character for the future outlook. Bandar Banang Jaya and others new town will replace the existing function of the town for the better expectations. In the context of Malay Archipelago, Batu Pahat town have its own pattern and historical significant. Which is started more than 100 years ago.

DESIGN STATEMENT
DESIGN CONCEPT :
In short, the idea and building concept are :
“the building as a response to the physical and social environment.
by identifying our culture, we must begin from the root. Educate
our community “
In the other words, the underlying principles of graduate centre design are to capture and enhance the serenity of the natural hill and serene site with its lush green and to enable the enjoyment of the experience of internal spaces. However, the basic idea and architectural elements are as follow :
1. HUMAN COMMUNICATION
Split level and recessed balcony to show the integration between architectural elements and human intervention. External walls regarded as permeable environmentally interactive membranes with adjustable openings and shadings.
2. HUMAN EXPERTISE
By creating idea and spaces more friendly to the community through landscape area, discussion area, arena etc. to improve the cultural value by encouraging teens doing beneficial activity. The improvement of the environment by maintains the existing use of green area and building. Relating the natural balance and human behavior.
3. ECOLOGY-NATURAL & MANMADE
Planting and landscaping should be used not only for the ecological and aesthetic benefits, but also to cool buildings. Planting are introduced as horizontal and vertical to faces and inner courts of upper parts. Solar shading is essential for all glazed walls facing the sun.

ANALOGY :
‘TENT’ as the analogy concept. Explain the traditional shelter for the mankind. In tropical climate zone, transitional spaces are already evident in much traditional architecture such as terraces and verandahways. These spaces are a crucial part of the local lifestyle for the graduate centre.

NATURAL VENTILATION & FAÇADE DESIGN :
Cross ventilation are used even in air-conditioned spaces, to cope with system breakdowns. Letting fresh air in and exhausting hot room air. Side vents operating as wind scoops located at the edges of the façade to capture wind and make the best use of the high wind speed found at upper levels.
MAIN STRUCTURAL DESIGN :
Exposed structure, express the beauty of the building and function. Creating new expectation for the setting. Structural building mass is used to store heat. The mass loses heat during the night and keeps internal spaces cool during the day.

SUSTAINABILITY :
AIR-CONDITIONING
Should be avoided in all new design. The inclusion of atria and lighting wells in large, deep planned office buildings, thereby utilizing the stack effect for natural ventilation. Should avoid the use of mechanical forms of air-conditioning. As air-conditioning is usually based upon CFCs in refrigeration. The arguments are both about reduced energy consumption and ozone protection. In term of comfort, divide large office / spaces into small spaces with individual controls and try to reduce the internal equipment and lighting loads.
CONSERVATION
Sustainable development is only possible if the conservation of buildings, land, energy and resources becomes commonplace. Recycling is part of the equation, but good, energy efficient and socially responsible architecture is most important.
INSULATION
Well-insulated buildings conserve energy and more comfortable. However, most insulation products are petroleum based and some use HCFC in their manufacture. Man made mineral fibers such as glass fiber quilt insulation are considered to be more ‘green’ but pose problems during installation with the inhalation of airborne fibers.
WATER
There are increasing economic and energy pressures to conserve water by better design and specification. Water conservation requires architects to question the demand for water, to reuse wastewater and to collect rainwater.

DESIGN STATEMENT
REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS :
The Graduate Centre is a simple ‘green’ building will be construct of mainly locally obtained materials alongside Batu Pahat fort. The building design aim’s to:
? Use timber from local ecologically managed woodlands.
? Allows visitors to understand building structures and construction.
? Sit well within its beautiful natural landscape.
? Demonstrate ‘green’ principle of design.
? Provide an environment, which introduces the construction of the building.
These general principles will be integrated in the design which is set into a hillside with a lower cutting land and filling land. As such the visual impact is keep to a minimum and what one does see is a continuation of local grasslands onto a roof whose simple timber-framing alludes to the forest edge nearby. By keeping the materials as simple and natural as possible.
